Veterans Week Sermon “Having Done All to Stand” Nov. 13, 2016 Pastor Richard Daughtridge

I remember standing in the middle of Arlington Cemetery looking at all the crosses. Each grave held someone’s son, daughter, brother, sister, father, or mother. I remember asking myself if all these wars were in vain? All these must have all believed there was a cause worth dying for. I felt so small and undeserving to be in the presence of thousands that made the sacrifice Christ mentioned when he said “greater hath no man love than this that he lay down his life for his friends. Later that same day I visited the Vietnam Wall Memorial and stood and watched friends and family searching for a name on the wall. Being of that era I knew some of my friends that were listed on the memorial. I felt honored to have known them and undeserving of their sacrifice.
To you that served and survived , you also deserve our deepest respect and thanks. Thank you for serving, protecting, and defending the freedom we enjoy.
Recently on the Sunday after 911 we unfolded the flag on the church lawn and had members of four of our armed forces pray a prayer. The first line of the Marine Prayer given by Bill Loughridge inspired my sermon this Sunday.
First Line of the Marine’s Prayer “Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will.”.

The title of the sermon is “Having Done All to Stand”. Today on Veterans day as I read the creeds and codes, that our American soldiers hold dear, I realize that Christians have values not only worth dying for but living for. We are Onward Christian Soldiers. I hope you’ll join us Sunday Nov. 13, 2016 at 9:30 to both hear the sermon and to honor the Veterans in the service. Service begins at 9:30 this Sunday at Jacob’s Church 495 Harbaugh Valley Road Fairfield Pennsylvania. (just off route 16 between Waynesboro and Emmetsburg). Pastor Richard
