Remember as a child being in the Christmas program?  Dressed in bathrobes using a homemade shepherd rods and towels draped over head we became shepherds and wise men. I wonder if we understood the drama we were involved in. One phrase in the Christmas story permeated my heart, “keeping watch over their flock by night.”  I don’t believe God waste words. The Holy Spirit that penned these words through Luke knew the attachment of a shepherd to his flock. It reflected God’s heart toward us as he planned the first Christmas.

1. God as Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

1 Kings 22:17 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the Lord said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.

Isaiah 40:11  He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

2. Man as a Shepherd

Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

Jeremiah 50:44  Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

Ezekiel 34:12  As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

3. Christ announced himself to be Chief Shepherd

John 10:11-12  I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. [12] But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

John 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

1 Peter 2:25

4. We are his Shepherds

John 10:2   But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

Hebrews 13:20  Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

 5. Christ is a Returning Shepherd

1 Peter 5:4  And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

So when you see the shepherds of Christmas you’ll know the rest of the story.  Merry Christmas
