Nehemiah Series “When Passion Prevails.” by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

1.      When passion overides insult.

Neh. 2:10

When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

Neh. 2:19-20

But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? [20] Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

Thick skin and a tender heart.

 2.      When passion overides fear.

Neh. 2:2 Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

Neh. 2:3-4  And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? [4] Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

3.      When passion overides division.

Neh. 3:1-23

  • The Ministry
  • The Talented
  • The Workers
  • The Goldsmiths
  • The Merchants

Mark 3:24-26 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. [25] And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. [26] And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.

Ephes. 4:2-3 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; [3] Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephes. 4:13  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Ephes. 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

 4.      When Passion overrides questions.

Neh. 4:2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said,

  • What do these feeble Jews?
  • will they fortify themselves?
  • will they sacrifice?
  • will they make an end in a day?
  • will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

5.      When passion becomes a prayer,

Neh. 4:9  Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
