“Wandering or Destined?”, part three of  a sermon series “The Christian Church Begins”  by Pastor Richard Daughtridge .

“The resurrection changed everything in the lives of those that followed Christ. They watched Christ live, die, and witnessed a Risen savior. Then they watched as Christ ascended  to Heaven.   They now were commissioned and empowered to begin one of the greatest institutions ever founded, the church.  How would they organize and become unified?  All were different yet resting on them was the responsibility to deliver the Gospel to the whole world. The Church begins.”

“We must as believers in Christ become followers of Christ.”

There are five types of leaders.

  • Those that talk about what needs to be done.
  • Those that Get it done.
  • Those that watch it being done.
  • Those that have no idea what’s being done.
  • Those that complain about what is done.

John 3:30  He must increase, but I must decrease.

A anecho  (Longsuffering: When someone is a pain in the neck hug their neck.)

C communication (Leadership 101 Communicate Communicate Communicate.)

C constraint  ( Shackles aren’t easily brocken.)

O organization (The we of the Christian the place where we abandon “me”).

R respect  ( Respect must be taught as a verb rather than a warm and fuzzy noun.)

D direction (The way up is down. Servanthood)

A anecho: “The exercise of patience; long suffering; indulgence towards those who injure us; lenity; delay of resentment or punishment.” And lenity is defined as “mildness of temper; softness; tenderness; mercy.”“To hold oneself up against, i.e. put up with: – bear with, endure, forbear, suffer.”

Colossians 3:12-14 “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with [anecho] one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity” .

1 John 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Ephesians 4:1-3 “Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance [anecho—forbearance] for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”.

Mark 10:37-38   They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. [38] But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with

Mark 10:41-44     And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. [42] But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. [43] But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: [44] And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

Respect

1 Cor. 12:23-31  And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. [24] For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: [25] That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. [26] And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. [27] Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. [28] And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. [29] Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? [30] Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? [31] But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Organization

1 Cor. 12:12-20  For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. [13] For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. [14] For the body is not one member, but many. [15] If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? [16] And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? [17] If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? [18] But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. [19] And if they were all one member, where were the body? [20] But now are they many members, yet but one body.

“Do we Communicate or Excommunicate?”, part two of  a sermon series “The Christian Church Begins”  by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

“The resurrection changed everything in the lives of those that followed Christ. They watched Christ live, die, and witnessed a  Risen savior. Then they watched as Christ ascended  to Heaven.   They now were commissioned and empowered to begin one of the greatest institutions ever founded, the church.  How would they organize even become unified?  All different yet resting on them was the responsibility to deliver the Gospel to the whole world. The Church begins.”

Today we want to take up where we left off the accord challenge. Christians have been accused of killing their wounded rather than healing the wounds. Respect is an essential which is traded in under the banners of evangelism and tradition. We suffer the loss of intimacy (glory of John 17:22) when we disrespect each other. The end must never justify the means.

John 17:22  And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Acts 1:14   These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

1 Corinthians 13:7  “love bears all things . . . endures all things”

A anecho : “The exercise of patience; long suffering; indulgence towards those who injure us; lenity; delay of resentment or punishment.” And lenity is defined as “mildness of temper; softness; tenderness; mercy.”“To hold oneself up against, i.e. put up with: – bear with, endure, forbear, suffer.”

C communication

Matthew 5:24  Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

C constraint

1 John 4:10-11  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

1 Cor. 15:29-34  Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? [30] And why stand we in jeopardy every hour? [31] I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. [32] If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die. [33] Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. [34] Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

2 Cor. 11:23-28   Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. [24] Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. [25] Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; [26] In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; [27] In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. [28] Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

1 John 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

“MOM” sermon notes on Mother’s Day by Pastor Richard Daughtridge of Jacob’s Church ,a historical Civil War Era church near Gettysburg in Fairfield, Pennsylvania near Frederick and Hagerstown, Maryland.

How do I talk about mothers, without feeling like I am boasting. I was blessed with the most wonderful mom, and I watched with admiration the way my wife cared for our children as they grew up. At times I felt like one of them. My children and her grandchildren  are still her biggest fans.  I learned to appreciate moms from the two most wonderful mothers that I’ve ever met, my mom and my wife. Motherhood is a calling, a chore, a battle, a blessing and a gift. Mothers deserve our praise, our recognition and our help.

(M)ajesty  (No greater way to describe a mother.)

(O)ath   (To oath to God is to partner with God on behalf of our children.)

(M)ission  (The bigger picture of replenish and multiply.)

Majesty

Proverbs 31:11-12  The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Proverbs 31:28-31 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. [29] Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. [30] Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. [31] Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Oath

1 Samuel 1:11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

Joshua 24:15  And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Mission

Genesis 1:28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

Mission is  a commission   God,  Husband , Wife

Ephes. 5:25  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

1.To be head of the wife (Ephes. 5:23).

2.To love their wives as Christ loved the Church (Ephes. 5:25).

3.To love their wives as their own bodies (Ephes. 5:28,33).

4.To nourish (Greek: ektrepho,  bring up, care for, protect, Ephes. 5:29;

5.To cherish (Greek: thalpo,  to foster, warm in one’s bosom, Ephes.5:29

6.To be joined as one flesh (Ephes. 5:30-31)

7.To leave their parents for their wives (Ephes. 5:31)

8.To cleave to their wives (Ephes. 5:31; Matthew 19:5)

Ephes. 5:22   Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

Col. 3:18  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

Four Commands for Wives

1.   Submit to their husbands as to Christ (Ephes. 5:22).

2.   Recognize the headship of their husbands (Ephes. 5:23).

3.   Be subject to their husbands (Ephes. 5:24).

4.   Reverence their husbands (Ephes. 5:33).

Conclusion:

Proverbs 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

“Christian Church Begins ”, a sermon by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

The resurrection changed everything in the lives of those that followed Christ. They watched Christ live, die, and witnessed a  Risen savior. Then they watched as Christ ascended  to Heaven.   They now were commissioned and empowered to begin one of the greatest institutions ever founded, the church.  How would they organize? They were all  different yet resting on them was the responsibility to deliver the Gospel to the whole world. The Church begins. Let’s follow in their footsteps and maybe we to may see our world changed.

Jesus’ Prayer

John 17:22  And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Acts 1:14   These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

1 Corinthians 13:7  “love bears all things . . . endures all things”

Here’s an acrostic of One accord

A anecho : “The exercise of patience; long suffering; indulgence towards those who injure us; lenity; delay of resentment or punishment.” And lenity is defined as “mildness of temper; softness; tenderness; mercy.”“To hold oneself up against, i.e. put up with: – bear with, endure, forbear, suffer.”

1 John 4:10-11  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Philemon 1:18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

1 John 4:18-21  There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. [19] We love him, because he first loved us. [20] If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? [21] And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

1 John 1:7  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
