Happy 4th of July

“From skipping though the Tulips to Real Christianity”, part one of “Disciplines of a Christian”, a sermon series by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

Today I want to start our series, “Disciplines of a Christian”.  I want to begin each sermon with a Promise, a Reality Check, and a  To-Do List.

Remember the Michael Jordon Nike commercial, “Just Do It”. Well doing something is a part of our faith. Faith is more than just a belief system we adopt or a church we join. Christ spoke more on the do’s of Christianity than the don’ts. The disciplines of a Christian are as important as a baby learning to walk. It is in these disciplines that we find life and liberty.

I’m afraid that we live in an instant fast world and we want little scripture pills to make us feel warm and fuzzy. I saw the news that one church was opening a drive through for prayer and confession.

Your word for today is a process in which you draw a verse from a box. A Bible verse is good but Christians need the whole understanding of the Bible not just fortune cookies.

One preacher declared that, “Christianity has become the entertainment capitol of the world.”

Another says, “We’ve diluted the message of the Gospel so it will be a little more politically correct and tolerant.”

Our church world is changing. We must never lose sight of the things that will change our lives forever.

Let’s be challenged to always be students of the Bible and doers of what we’ve learned.

  1. Promises

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)  For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Romans 8:1 (phrase 1)  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,

Romans 8:28 (phrase 1)  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,

All are great promises. Now let’s leave Mamsy Pamsy Land and get into the real world. Expect a shock but remember in the last point we’ll find the reality of the promises we just studied.

  1. Reality Check

2 Corinthians 4:8-10  (NIV)   We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

2 Corinthians 11:23-29 (NIV)  I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.

“Christian’s for years have been known for their don’t do list..”

  1. To-Do List

James 2:17   Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Jeremiah 29:12-13 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Romans 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:37- 39 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,  neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
