“Peter the Rock” by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

Sermon Series Easter 2011 “Witnesses of those that watched Christ die.”

Today we want to hear the testimony of Peter. The passion of Christ that played out transformed Peter from an opinion to an authority, from cowardness to courageousness, and from a doubter to a believer. His world was turned upside down.  We’ll begin back at the upper room. Jesus told the disciples about his betrayal, they took first communion together then they sang a hymn.

A. Ever wonder what hymn they sang?

Matthew 26:30-35  And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

B.    You will be offended for me.

Matthew 26 :31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. [32] But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

C.   Sincere but powerless words.

Matthew 26:33  Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.

D.   Exposed weaknesses?

Matthew 26 :34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. [35] Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

Matthew 26:36-38 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

E.  Inner Circle

Matthew 26:37  And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. [38] Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

Matthew 16:18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

F. Self Exploration

Matthew 26:75  And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Luke 22:62  And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

John 2:19  Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

G. From a Rock to a Temple.

Acts 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 3:4-5  And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. [5] And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them.

H. Peter the wimp became Peter the Rock.

Acts 3:12-15   And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? [13] The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. [14] But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; [15] And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

I. What about you?

Peter instructed many in the way of salvation. Truth demands a decision. What is your verdict?

Acts 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
