The Effectual Prayer (Prayer that gets Results) by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

Ever wonder as you prayed if God was listening? How can I get His attention? What are the things that connect us to God when we pray? Obviously God hasn’t changed. Have our communications with God changed?  So many questions.

For the next few weeks we will talk about prayer. We will study a higher level of effective prayer and re-identify with the never changing, prayer answering God of the Bible that is expecting our call.

Our desire is to fulfill James 5:16, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

How can we formulate an effectual prayer?  (Webster: Effectual= One that gets results)

Let’s begin with examining our prayer partner and primary teacher of prayer, Jesus the Son.

A. Involvement that Christ has in our daily lives.

Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

If such involvement takes place on our behalf after we are adopted into Christ without our asking, then how much more can our expectations be when we ask?

Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. [15] For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

B. The door is open to come boldly to find Mercy, Grace, Help

1.         Mercy ( Covers our Imperfection and wrong choices as we mature in Christ)

2.         Grace (Product of a divine unconditional love that bonds God to us immeasurably.)

3.         Help ( An answer to the need list of our prayer)

Luke 11:9-13 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. [10] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [11] If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? [12] Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? [13] If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

  1. Benefits of asking largely.

1.Opportunities (Opening of Doors)

2.Provisions ( Daily Bread)

3.Gifts (Recipients of the Holy Spirit working on our behalf.)

D. Focus of our Prayer (“Take Aim. Hold the gun steady. Fire.”)

Luke 18:7-8 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? [8] I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Luke 18:10-14 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. [11] The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. [12] I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. [13] And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. [14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

  1. The first man as he prayed looked at himself and compared himself to others.
  2. The second looked at God and humbled himself. (No such thing as an arrogant effectual prayer.)

2 Chron. 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

E. Growing in our Faith (No such thing as a faithless effectual prayer.)

Hebrews 10:19-23 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, [20] By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; [21] And having an high priest over the house of God; [22] Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. [23] Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Mark 6:6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

Mark 9:23-24 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. [24] And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

To be continued Next Week.

Sharpen your aim and your prayer skills using the following prayer. Fill the blanks as best you can. Adapt this prayer to your needs as format . We’ll discuss in  next week’s sermon  why I chose this model and we will fill in the blanks.
