Who is my family? “You may be a redneck if _____________________? “ by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

Ever hear the statement, “You can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family”?

Any family members come to mind that you wouldn’t choose? Don’t say their name. I think everybody in this church is related.

Where I came from, if you wanted to insult someone just say something bad about their mama. These were fighting words. We called this family ties.

I got an email from my brother Dan entitled, “These are our relatives.” It was a picture of a dining room table turned upside down with a boat motor attached. It had two chairs nailed to the bottom of the table and two fishermen with hat and tackle. Painted on the side of table were the words bass boat.

Father’s day is next week. This bass boat story is a reminder to my family. We may be without a table this Thanksgiving.

So what is a family?

The North Carolina definition is Kin Folks. The l in folks is silent. foks

The Greek word in the Bible however is patria. It means: lineage

Jesus talked a lot about family. There were Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Then there was us. We were adopted but with all the family benefits. We are part of a great family, not only here at Jacob’s Church but in the family of Christ around the world.

Matthew 12:48-50 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? [49] And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! [50] For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Ephesians 3:14-21 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15from whom his whole family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all  the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Now let’s answer the question. Who is our family?

Announcement Heritage Days Worship Service.

Don’t forget our community worship service June 27 @10:00 in the tent on the Ft. Richie Parade Ground, beside the Community Center. A number of churches are participating. Pastor Daughtridge will be bringing the message, “How Great Thou Art”, and Jacob’s Church children’s program, under the direction of Keith and Sheri Walters, will be conduction a program for kid’s with the big parachute. We’ll all meet under the tent. The children will be dismissed to thier program after the song service.
