Sermon Outline 01/31/10 “The Disciplines of a Disciple” by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

Our 2010 Slogan “Majesty – Maintenance – Mission – Mix”

Today’s topic: Maintenance

“The Disciplines of a Disciple” by Pastor Richard Daughtridge

Today we all step in front of the mirror to see how we look. Today we step on the scale to see how much we weigh. Today we take the IQ test to see how much we’ve learned. Today we run the race to see how fast we are.

The mirror must be cracked, the scale must be broken, the test must be scored wrong, and the stop watch must be off. Sound familiar? I like the sign that I saw in a garage that read, “Maintenance Required – Don’t Blame The Manufacturer”.

Romans 12:1-16 reflects all the above. Let’s read it together.

How do you rate yourself?  Scale is 1-10

Now before we get started tell the person beside you, “I’m here for a tune up.

Disciple: A disciple is a follower and student of a mentor, teacher, or otherwise figure.

I’m not so bad compared to ___________________.

Not so bad based on:

1. Tradition

Matthew 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

2. Grace

Romans 12:3  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Ephes. 4:7   But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ

3. The Bible

2 Cor. 10:13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.

4.   Christ

Ephes. 4:13  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:

5. Measure of Others

Ephes. 4:16   From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

James 5:16  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Ok, we are all on the Biggest Loser. Time to weigh in.

Let’s get on the scale of:

  1. Prayer
  2. Bible Study
  3. Devotion
  4. Church Attendance
  5. Giving
  6. Relationships
  7. Service

Romans 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
