Sermon Notes “Educating Simon Peter” 08/16/09 by Richard Daughtridge

From “Simon says” to “Peter the Rock”richard2

1. Simon meets Jesus

Matthew 4:18   And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

2. Simon Follows Christ

Mark 1:18  And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

3. Simon’s mother-in -law  healed.

Mark 1:29-30   And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. [30] But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

4. Simon gets a degree in theology and kneeology (prayer)

Matthew 5:1-2   And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: [2] And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

(Verse two is completed in  following  three chapters of Matthew could outline the curriculum for a seminary)

5. Simon experiences another dimension.

Mark 9:5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. Matthew 14:27-31

6. Simon and the disciples rescued. Simon walks on water.

Matthew 14:31  And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.  And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

7. Love Test

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

8. Seminary  pre-exam Pop Quiz

Matthew 16:13-16  When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? [14] And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. [15] He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? [16] And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

(Peter answered correctly.)

9. Teacher prepares his students for responsibilities after graduation.

Matthew 16:21-23  From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. [22] Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. [23] But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

10. Peter  disruptive in class.

John 18:10-11 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. [11] Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

11. Peter’s Denial of Christ

Mark 14:54  And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

12. Peters response to his failure.

Matthew 26:75  And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

However many were Peter’s failures, there is always, as Paul Harvey would say, “The rest of the story”. Peter became one of the foundational members of Christianity and influenced millions of lives over history.  We owe him a debt of gratitude. Four things to note:

  1. He was discipled by Christ personally.
  2. He humbled himself. (wept bitterly)
  3. He  loved not his life unto death.
  4. God used him to bless the world.

13. Graduation

Matthew 16:18  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

14. Valedictorian Address

Acts 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Acts 3:12  And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?

Peter was according to tradition crucified upside down in Rome under Nero persecution around 67AD .

“It was not through his death that he influenced the world but through his living.”

May we at Jacob’s church like Peter be a rock?
