Sermon 07/12/08 “Don’t Die Empty Handed. You Can Take It With You.”

richard2“Don’t Die Empty Handed. You Can Take it With You.” by Richard Daughtridge

Mary Stottlemyer,  our organist, told me Sunday that she saw a funeral procession last week with cars that had their head lights on, flags on the cars and, of course, a hearse. The procession  was followed by an armored car which must have been caught in the traffic. She said it looked strange.

Whatever was in that armored car probably had nothing to do with the body in the hearse but it looked as though someone was taking their lifelong wealth with them.

We ‘ve always heard the old saying, “Well you can’t take it with you.”

Jesus on the other hand in his teachings implied that we could take it with us.

Is it possible that we can deposits earthly treasures into heavenly accounts?

We were preaching at a large church in Conception, Chile in 1978. The pastor decided to receive an offering for the visiting evangelist and we were amazed at the quantity of bills. Four ushers held each corner of a sheet and the offering was about $28.00 US dollars. It was a bushel basket of paper money but because of the rate of exchange only worth $28.00. The rate of exchange was about 1800 Escudos (Chilean Dollars) to $1.00 US money. We realized very quickly that we hadn’t won the lottery.

One of the first things that you learn as a missionary is to get the greatest rate of exchange when changing your dollars into foreign currency. The amount you get  is not the same at every exchange location.

What will happen when we cash in when we get to heaven?

What will be the rate of exchange? Two good deeds on earth for a star on our crown or maybe angel wings like the Christmas movie.

Can we take it with us and how do we exchange or transfer it into a heavenly account?

I believe that there are two accounts we will access when we get to heaven.

  1. Deposits Christ made on our behalf.
  2. Deposits we set up by our works on earth. (automatic deposit)

The currencies that seem to be the venue of exchange (heavenly dollars)  in the beyond are tears, love, belief, works and deeds. All are as valid as a 20, 50 or a 100 dollar bill, only in heaven.

Now how do we cash in earthly assets into heavenly investments?

Jesus Said:

Matthew 6:19-20 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

Paul made his deposits: Works

Being about our Father’s business it is not always convenient. It takes effort and work. We don’t always have the warm and fuzzy. These wear off after the start up with the test of living in this fallen world. We do know, however, that the fruits of our work are eternal.

1 Cor. 3:8  Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

1 Cor. 3:11-15  For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. [12] Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; [13] Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. [14] If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. [15] If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Shared Investments in Heaven: Friends

Sometimes I’m asked if we will know each other in heaven. I believe that not only will we know each other but we’ll see each other through different eyes of understanding. Our vision will not be blurred with misunderstandings and unforgiveness. We’ll have new bodies and new minds but some of the same friends. Friendships don’t just last a lifetime but for eternity. Jesus values friendships and taught of the eternal values.

Luke 16:9  And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

Matthew 5:46   For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Matthew 5:12  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Psalm 126:5-6 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. [6] He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Peter’s Deposit: the Words of God that connects heaven and earth

Remember when Christ asked Peter, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter’s response was, “You are _______________. You fill in the blank.

Did you sense that those words connected you to the unseen world? The Bible is full of such words that are eternal connectors. They change from just written empty words to words of life, hope and promise when spoken mixed with faith. Such words are a sample of the eternal experience when empowered by the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 1:23  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Quantity is a Choice: Entrance with Abundance

2 Peter 1:10-11  Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: [11] For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Olympics of Heaven’s Award Podiums: Efforts

Matthew 16:27  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

2 Cor. 5:8-10   We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. [9] Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. [10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Rev. 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rev. 22:12-13 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. [13] I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Incorruptible Clothes: Crowns

2 Tim. 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Rev. 7:9  After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

Can we take it with us?

A good friend of mine, Gary Gift, went home to be with the Lord last year. He always joked, “I’m going to have a U-Haul and an ice cream truck in my funeral procession. I’ll need the U-Haul because I’m going to take my earthly possessions with me and the ice cream truck for the mourners to celebrate with me that I did take it with me.”  I understand they actually had the ice cream truck serving ice cream at the grave side . The U-Haul, however, was sent ahead through a heavenly transfer. A trust was placed in Gary’s name.

Your name was written in heaven  when you accepted Christ as your Savior.  A heavenly account was opened in your name.

How are your deposits ?
