The Person & Work of the Holy Spirit

Sermon Notes 02/22/09

#1 – The Holy Spirit is a person

The Holy Spirit:

• Can be lied to (Acts 5:3)

• Can be resisted (Acts 7:51)

• Can be obeyed (Acts 10:19)

• Intercedes in prayer for followers of Christ (Romans 8:26)

• Can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30)

#2 – The Holy Spirit is “God”

• Omnipresent (Psalm 139:7)

• Omnipotent (Isaiah 40:13)

• Omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10)

• Sovereign (1 Corinthians 12:11)

• Took part in the creation of the world (Genesis 1:2)

• Took part in the writing of the Bible (1 Peter 1:11)

Almost all the work of God going on in the world today is being done by God the Holy Spirit.

#1 – The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts/convinces people.

“He will convict the world regarding sin and righteousness and judgment.” John 16:8

#2 – The Holy Spirit is the one who regenerates us as followers of Jesus Christ.
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:6

#3 – The Holy Spirit is the one who gives us assurance of our salvation

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.” Rom.8:16

#4 – The Holy Spirit is the person of the Godhead who indwells every follower of Jesus Christ

“Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have from God, and thus you are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19

#5 – The Holy Spirit is the one who illuminates our minds.

“But we have received the Spirit who is from God, so that we can understand the truths freely given to us by God.” 1 Corinthians 2:12

#6 – The Holy Spirit is the one who gives us spiritual gifts to serve God and the power to use them

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. [8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; [9] To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; [10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: [11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” 1 Cor. 12:7-11

(#7 – The Holy Spirit is the one who comforts us in the trials of life (John 14:26, 27)

#8 – The Holy Spirit is the one who restrains evil in the world so the work of God can move forward (2 Thessalonians 2:6, 7)

#9 – The Holy Spirit is God’s down payment on us as followers of Jesus Christ

“After you believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is God’s down payment guaranteeing our inheritance.” Ephesians 1:13

We know that He who raised Jesus will raise us also . . . so that our mortality will be swallowed up by eternal life. Now he who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.” 2 Corinthians 4:14

One Response to “The Person & Work of the Holy Spirit / Sermon /Pastor Richard Daughtridge”

  1. I like being able to follow the sermons here, but I’m wondering if there is anyway to expand the content. It looks like it was a great message, but it is a little hard to follow from the just the outline. It may be a good idea to have either an audio or a video clip here so that we could actually hear the sermon as we go over the outline. Vimeo (www.vimeo.com) lets you stream videos with no length restraints and the embed code is very simple.

Just a thought…thanks for putting up these Sermons for those of us who are out of town and don’t always get to hear your preach in person.
